Letter of congressman Frank Wolf to Laogai Research Foundation
Dear Harry,

I regret that I was not able to attend this important dinner to complete what I am sure has been a stimulating day of speakers. From reading over the program, I was very impressed with your lineup of some of the world's leading scholars on China as well as well-known dissidents.

Your own experience of suffering in a Laogai prison was inspirational to me and spurred my involvement in China human rights issues. I am privileged to continue to learn from you and to call you a friend.

We are in an important period of China's history. I believe the United States and the international community play a critical role in shedding light on the extent and degree of human rights violations in China. President Hu's recent visit to America reminds us that too often trade and economics dominate any conversation about China, while severe persecution goes unnoticed, as you all have discussed today.
From the jailing of journalist Shi Tao to the persecution of nearly every religious group, and from forced organ harvesting to the philosophy and hardship of "reform through labor" in the Laogai, the Chinese Communist Party brutally persecutes its people.

Thank you for your dedication to this issue. Please continue your great work and know that I will continue to fight for human rights in China.

Best wishes.

Sincerely

Frank R. Wolf
Member of Congress
